Need to Know! Information for Parents and/or Carers

We meet on Tuesdays during term time from 18:00-19:20 at our HQ in Marshgate Drive, Hertford SG13 7JY

Required Items for our regular weekly meeting:

A rucksack containing:

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Gloves
  • High-speed running waterproof boots or Wellies
  • Torch
  • Filled Bottle (water only)
  • ‘Emergency’ non-perishable snack
Uniform

This will be a cubs T-Shirt (we will advise you when to order this) and activity trousers. [Jeans are not to be worn- ever!]

Suppliers such as Go-Outdoors have really good ‘activity’ trousers which are quick drying, durable and look outdoorsy-perfect for adventurers. Scouts qualify for discount from Go Outdoors, Blacks, Millets and Ultimate Outdoors - find out how on the Scout website.

Drop-off and Pick-up:
  • Drop-off: 17:55 for 18:00 start (cars are not allowed in hut car park).
  • Pick-up: 19:20. Please be punctual to allow the next scouting group to start at 19:30.
N.B. There will be others picking up or dropping off and the road will be busy.
  • Sustainable Travel: We welcome walking and cycling to the hut. You may leave your bike around the back of the hut - but please bring a strong lock and secure it to something. Please don’t leave bicycles at the front.

Don’t leave cars on the road. Marshgate Drive is a private road and parking tickets are often issued, even in the evening.
The nearest car park is at the end of the road beyond the hut.

Medical information

We need this to enable us to keep your child safe.

Please log in to OSM and and enter any allergies your child has, or any specific medical information that may affect what your child is able to do.

This information is critical. You must do this before your child comes to Cubs.

Please call Steve if you cannot enter the information on OSM. [You need to scroll down the OSM page to enter the data.]

Communication

WhatsApp Group: To avoid overloading parents with messages, and to keep our communication in one place, we are not setting up a What'sApp group.

Parents Rota

We need regular support from parents and carers to support our Cubs sessions. Please register your interest on OSM to let us know when you would like to help - or phone Amanda to let her know when you can help. Another set of eyes during activities help ensure the activity is conducted safely with lots of fun.

Facebook and Photos

We may post photos on our private group on Facebook. [Details are to be confirmed regarding social media.] If you don’t want photos of your child to appear, please update this on OSM. We ask parents/carers to not take photos of activities.

OSM

We use OSM to collect information about our Cubs and to show information for you, e.g. Programme information and changes. You will receive a link from us so you can log-in and register on the parents portal. See below for more information.

OSM on your phone or tablet

If you bookmark OSM to your homescreen on your phone/tablet, it will behave just like a real app, and it can work offline.

  • On Chrome on Android, open OSM, click the vertical ellipsis (in the Chrome toolbar, not in OSM) and click "Add to Home screen".
  • On Safari on an iPhone/iPad, open OSM, click the square/arrow icon on the Safari toolbar and then "Add to Home Screen".
Investing Cubs

We aim to invest all cubs before Christmas. We supply the neckers; You supply the Cubs T-shirt and activity trousers.

Phones

We very strongly encourage that phones etc are not brought to Cubs. Steve and Amanda will have their phones switched-on. Feel free to call, [not message], if you need to convey a message to your child during the meeting.

Subs

£13 per month or £156 per year

The easiest way to pay is by standing order. Our treasurer will send you payment details.

If you are a UK tax-payer, please consider signing up to Gift-Aid. This benefits the group greatly and costs you nothing!

Programme

Weekly event/activity details will be shared at the end of each session and posted on OSM.
